Trump’s newest warning to introduce an extra complete levy on Chinese goods has been labeled a “prime illustration” of US double standards, per the Chinese government.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that China could implement its own unrevealed “countermeasures” if the American leader executes his pledge, noting that the country was “fearless” of a looming trade war.

On Friday, Donald Trump hit back at the Chinese government’s action to reinforce its regulations for overseas sales of rare earths, alleging China of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

Additionally, he vowed to withdraw from a scheduled summit with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a conference in Seoul later this month.

His statements on Friday unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 falling by 2.7%, marking its largest decline since April.

These statements reignited concerns of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the both nations had consented to drop significant levies on each other’s imports, which had led to concerns of trade halting between the two nations.

This left, United States levies on Chinese goods incurring an additional 30% levy compared with the beginning of 2025, while American products entering the Chinese market incur a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – issued by the relevant government department in the form of official answers to media inquiries – reflected rhetoric from the peak of the ongoing trade dispute.

The remarks condemned United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while supporting the country’s own restrictions on exports on key elements as “routine measures” to safeguard domestic safety and that of every country.

Their representative remarked that for “an extended period”, the United States had “broadened the definition” of national security, exploited export control measures and “adopted discriminatory practices against China.

“Using” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to engage with the Chinese government,” their representative stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a tariff war has consistently been consistent: we do not want one, but we are not afraid of one.”

The previous week, Beijing revealed it was strengthening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and other materials vital for high-technology production.

This was seen as a important measure, as the country refines about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in products such as renewable energy components and mobile phones.

New remarks from the US and China are being viewed by analysts as a means of bolstering negotiating stances prior to future trade talks.

Remains uncertain whether a talks between Trump and President Xi, planned at a summit in the Republic of Korea later this month, will still proceed.
