"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals often feature them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to make music."

"So anyone is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The band have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global following.

But the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"We have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
